Kayla Johnson
Kayla Johnson joined Bellevue Youth Choirs in 2016 and has served the organization in many roles over the years, including accompanist for several choir levels and director of the Intermezzo Choir. She now leads the organization as Artistic & Executive Director since 2023 and currently directs the Lyrica and Cantare choirs, working with BYC’s middle and high school singers.
Kayla is passionate about helping young musicians develop healthy singing habits, strong musicianship skills, and a deep appreciation for collaborative music-making. Through diverse repertoire and joyful learning experiences, she strives to create a space where every chorister feels a sense of comfort, belonging, and confidence. Her hope is that singers leave BYC not only with musical skills, but with a lifelong love of singing and community.
Kayla earned bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Mathematics from Washington State University in 2012 and a Master of Arts in Music Education with emphasis on Choral Conducting in 2013. She also completed the first level of Kodály certification, deepening her commitment to teaching music literacy through play, movement, and joyful exploration.
Prior to becoming Artistic & Executive Director of BYC, Kayla performed frequently with The Esoterics, worked as a teaching artist with Seattle Opera, and maintained a private studio teaching voice, piano, and math.
Kayla enjoys spending time with her husband Brett and their two children—both of whom sing with Bellevue Youth Choirs! As a family, we love getting out on the water as well as enjoying concerts and video game events in the area!
