About the Position

BYC seeks a Teaching Assistant to join our team and work with our Pre-K to Kindergarten choirs. This person will work closely with our lead director, Ms. Janet Ankomah. Attending concerts is entirely optional and piano skills are not necessary. The ideal candidate has a passion for early childhood music and is able to assist the director with any student needs.    


Days of Service:

  • Tuesdays (5:00-6:45pm)Assist current director Janet Ankomah with Prelude

 

Rehearsals begin the week of September 8, 2025, following the Bellevue School District calendar (with breaks during Thanksgiving, Winter, Midwinter, and Spring).

Responsibilities:

·        Provide classroom assistance for Ms. Janet Ankomah during Prelude rehearsal (PreK-K) on Tuesdays from 5:00 – 6:45pm.(Includes arriving 10 minutes earlier than choristers)

·        Be a confident vocal model for students in rehearsal.

·        Serve as a role model (rehearsal technique, mutual respect, musical/vocal) for choristers in all choir levels.

·        Assist Ms. Janet Ankomah with classroom management and chorister needs.

·        Optionally – attend our March and June Mainstage concerts (tentatively planned for March 22ndand June 6th)

Qualifications:

·        Formal music training; degree incollaborative piano or music education preferred.

·        Passion for early childhood musiceducation.

·        Prior experience teaching children in aclassroom setting preferred.

·        Desire to create artistry with youngpeople; experience working with preschool/elementary aged students.

·        Strong interpersonal skills and theability to communicate clearly with children and adults.

·        Collaborative – can work with other BYC teachers, pianists, and instrumentalists during the rehearsal process and concerts.

·        Effective and responsive communication skills for working with choristers, parents and staff in a timely manner.

·        A desire to see BYC grow and thrive and to help foster a greater sense of community and belonging.

Position Details

Status: Hourly, part-time. September through June.One-year renewable contract.
Pay: $35-50/hour for rehearsals, depending on experience. $150-200 flatrate per Mainstage concert. Additional pay for tours/outreach when applicable.
Reports to: Executive & Artistic Director, Kayla Johnson
Location: Cross of Christ Church, 411 156th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA 98007.Concert locations vary.

Bellevue Youth Choirs (BYC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2012, serving youth from Pre-K through 12th+grade across the greater Bellevue area. Choristers learn vocal technique, musicianship, and performance skills while participating in mainstage concerts, outreach events, festivals, and collaborations with premier musical groups.
